Ricardo Carpenter, Medicare Insurance Broker and Retirement Advisor
30 Plus Years of Experience. Two National Certifications. And a Medicare Beneficiary Himself.
Ricardo helps New Jersey seniors cut through the complexity of Medicare, Social Security, and IRMAA so they keep more of the retirement income they worked their whole life to earn. He does not just study these rules. He lives under them.
Certified in the Two Areas That Actually Save You Money

National Social Security Advisor

IRMAA Certified Planner (IRMAACP)
Most Medicare agents are licensed to sell you a plan. Very few are certified to advise you on how Social Security and IRMAA surcharges will affect what that plan actually costs you. Ricardo holds both certifications, and that combination is rare among Medicare brokers in New Jersey.
How an NSSA® Certified Advisor Will Help You
An NSSA® Certified Advisor provides the knowledge and expertise needed to maximize your Social Security benefits and help you achieve a secure retirement.
Avoid Costly Social Security Claiming Mistakes
Navigating Social Security rules can be complex, and even small mistakes can cost you thousands of dollars in lost benefits. An NSSA® Certified Advisor ensures you make informed decisions and avoid costly errors that could reduce your lifetime income.
Holistic Retirement Planning
An NSSA® Advisor integrates your Social Security strategy with your overall retirement plan, ensuring your assets work together to meet your financial goals and create a clearer path to a secure future.
Guidance You Won't Get from the Social Security Office
The Social Security office provides information but doesn't offer personalized advice or strategies. An NSSA® Certified Advisor delivers tailored solutions based on your unique circumstances, goals, and retirement timeline.

Five Things Ricardo Wants Every Client to Understand
1. Medicare Is Not Optional
Medicare enrollment carries real deadlines, and missing them can create lifetime penalties. The late enrollment penalty for Part B adds 10 percent to your premium for every full year you were eligible but did not sign up, and it lasts for as long as you have Medicare. Understanding these timelines before they pass is one of the most valuable things an advisor can do for you. Ricardo reviews your enrollment windows early so you never face an avoidable surcharge.
2. Your Premiums Rise With Your Income
Medicare Part B and Part D premiums are income based, meaning higher income earners pay meaningfully more for the exact same coverage. This happens through something called IRMAA, or the Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount. If your modified adjusted gross income exceeds certain thresholds, you pay an additional amount on top of the standard premium. Many retirees discover this only after their first premium deduction hits. Ricardo helps you understand what to expect and whether there are planning steps worth considering.
3. Nearly All Retirement Income Counts Toward IRMAA
Withdrawals from traditional IRAs and 401(k)s, pension distributions, capital gains, tax exempt bond interest, and even half of your Social Security benefits all feed into the MAGI calculation used to determine IRMAA. This surprises most people who spent decades building retirement savings only to find that drawing on those savings triggers higher Medicare premiums. Ricardo maps out how your income sources interact so there are fewer surprises down the road.
4. Surcharges Reduce Your Social Security Check Automatically
IRMAA surcharges are not billed separately. They are deducted directly from your monthly Social Security benefit. This means many people never see a bill and never realize they are paying more than the standard premium. It shows up as a smaller deposit each month. Ricardo makes sure you see the full picture upfront so you understand exactly what is coming out of each check and why.
5. Your Social Security Benefits Are Themselves Taxable
Depending on your total combined income, up to 85 percent of your Social Security benefits can be subject to federal income tax. When you layer federal taxes on top of IRMAA surcharges and standard Medicare premiums, the cumulative effect can be substantial. Ricardo looks at these pieces together rather than in isolation, which is how real retirement income protection actually works.
Most people hear these five points for the first time after the money is already gone. Ricardo covers them at the very beginning.
Why Ricardo Is Different From Most Medicare Agents
Ricardo is a Medicare beneficiary himself. He is not explaining a system he studied from the outside. He is explaining the same system he lives under, using the same certifications he earned to protect his own retirement income. That perspective, combined with two national certifications, is what separates him from most Medicare agents.
Giving Back to the Community
Beyond his work with clients, Ricardo has served as a Board Member for Partners for Kids and Families, an organization providing care management and support for children ages 5 to 18 facing emotional and behavioral challenges. For the past 30 years he has remained an active participant in nonprofit work dedicated to supporting at risk youth. This commitment reflects the same values he brings to his advisory practice: patience, empathy, and a genuine desire to help people navigate difficult circumstances.
